If you mean NTFS by windows partition then no. Any modern UNIX will insist on ext3 file-system. And with reason, who wants to do defragmenting every week? Actually, I am not sure if I understand the question, whatever you install, you'll have to format the partition(s) for it.

And... partitions... on unices, one is for system files, other is for swap and (optional) third one is for /home i.e. user's files. Which is simple and nice thing. Swap is much faster when has own partition instead of single file. And separate partition for user's files, settings and preferences allows you to reinstall the whole system and have your old desktop (including all settings for all the programs, icons, wallpapers.... browsing history, passwords...trash in the recycle bin...) just before changing the system.

Just like Mac OS X, one for the system files, and one for our files. Plus, I heard it's very similar to the Mac OS X interface :D And I LOVE Macs! :D .

By the way, do you think there's a way to install Gutsy Gibbon on a Windows partition? :???: .

Yeah, I know that... That's one of the reasons I cannot get with win things. When I have win I reinstall it all the time (not my fault that it get broken every two months) so I cannot fit into allowed number of instalations. That law and eula things are too complicated for my tiny brain. I prefer to put the CD in, click install and go on without thinking :)

@Dan: Yeah, I really wanna install Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon :D . But I got no spare partition, and my spare computer has Windows XP Genuine since about two months ago, so I don't wanna lose one of the three allowed installations per license! Lol.
