I recently rented a Playstation 2 game called Mortal Kombat: Armageddon on my Backwards-compatible Playstation 3 (i’m mentioning this as the new 40GB Playstation 3 does NOT support Backwards-compatibility at all! [it does support Playstation {One} games, but those are too crappy to be count.]), and I gotta say, it’s as good as a Playstation 3 game. Up to 62 players playable, amazing “Konquest” (Conquest = one big quest consisting of normal-sized quests) mode, Motor Kombat (an option to play a small racing game with mini-characters, one of the mini-games released in every series game), Kreate-A-Fighter (self-explanatory), and of course, improved fighting system.
First, I gotta mention, it kicks ass when run on the Playstation 3. It boasts a powerful 480p (480 x 720) resolution for the Playstation 2, making the upscaling mechanism built-in the Playstation 3 very useful. This way, I can upscale it all the way up to 1080p (1080 x 1920) without seeing any pixelation, distortion, or “video jiggle”.
Second, it’s addictive. I can’t stop playing it, and even started KonQuest a second time1, and it’s fun beating up people again!
.
So, let’s review stuff:
1. Tons of characters
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon certainly has tons of characters. It has the entire life span of characters in the Mortal Kombat series. Players counted, and it’s 62 in total! WOW! Though some are very much alike, just with some textures changed. I can understand, as Playstation 2 games have a maximum of 4.7GB storage on the DVD disc, so they couldn’t stuff, well, stuff. The character hit and strike voices are in low-quality, which could be the answer how they did it, but I don’t care. We barely notice ‘em, so why record them in high-quality?
.
2. Konquest
Konquest existed since the Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance game and even took up a whole disc in Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, but the Konquest mode here is the most impressive of all. In graphics, storyline, animations, and difficulty. As expected, the difficulty rises every time you advance in the story. The boss wasn’t so difficult and frustrating to me, but sadly, the once 15cm newspapers pile — that’s now 5cm — begs to differ regarding frustration violence, hehe
.
3. Motor Kombat
As in the tradition, they include a mini-game or two in every game. In my previous game owned, it’s Puzzle Kombat and Chess Kombat. Well, this beats the two, combined!
. I especially like to play this with a friend
.
4. Kreate-A-Fighter
This mode was awesome to use. I created a little Elder God armor-equipped warrior, and made customizations to everything, from normal Kombat moves, to special, pop-uppy moves.
5. Kombat
The main feature that we all love, never ceases to amaze! The new Air Kombat and Parry System are hard, but I somehow used the Air Kombat thingy, and it’s AWESOME! Though it seems half-realistic, but, that’s Mortal Kombat. Unrealistic in every proportion! Especially the part where we rip out people’s spines, heads, hearts, arms, eyes, and other gross stuff.
6. Result
The game is totally awesome, and I still wonder how it got 7.6/10. I give it a 9.5/10 due to too short KonQuest storyline! But, it’s still the most awesome game in the Mortal Kombat series.
- Actually, it’s because I forgot some items around the place and couldn’t get the final bonus :-S [↩]
