Linden Labs does it again with SecondLife woes

(and yes, I know that they’re called Linden Lab, and it’s called Second Life, but this is just for protest ;) )

Well, Linden did it again with their ridiculous new trademark policy. True, I signed up for that inSL™ program, but, who says we have to give up our free use of the Second Life name? (Nope, no ™ there.) True, businesses will have to do that, but we should us bloggers and talkers use that weird and out-of-context ™ mark? Why should we stop expressing our thoughts freely, without a stupid law requiring us to add a ™ after every stupid name Linden Lab registered? Why?

Let’s say i’m talking about having my own iPod, and, I just blogged about buying it:

Yay! I finally got my iPod™! Now, I just need to fire up iTunes™ and download my entire library to my iPod™… Ugh, it’s so much better than that Zune™ Microsoft™ have been trying to advertise for so long! It works much better, and it runs homebrew :D Plus, it has a graphics chip (by the world’s worst graphical cards makers, Intel™) so it can render 3D stuff :D . I wonder if it can run Second Life™, There™ or even The Sims Online EA-Land™…

Why should I stick a TM there every few words? Why should I add a small symbol that takes a few more seconds every time I add it, but ends up taking a whole minute in a post (in total) ? Why? I say we don’t use that ™ symbol, and if Linden care so much for their TM symbol, then make an exception for personal blogs! (News companies will still have to use it, they will have a serious legal issue if they don’t)

So… Who’s with me?1

(legal text)2

  1. I don’t have to use the ©, ® and ™ since i’m outside the United States, in Israel. I can also use the Second Life name written in Hebrew letters like it was a free word around the internet, as it is not a trademark this way. []
  2. Linden Lab and Second Life are named how they should not be, only to express the problem us bloggers have now run into. Linden Lab and Second Life are registered trademarks of Linden Research, Inc. and are not affiliated with me, Smiley Barry, in any way. []

Mobile “Ignore List” and “Statuses”: How to get those on your Motorola or Sony Ericsson phone.

Hey there, Smiley here, blogging from my other computer. This post is about how you can create an “Ignore List” like in virtual worlds and Instant Messengers, and how to create different “Statuses” that could filter certain contacts from reaching your phone. Who said formatting’s good?

[EDIT @ 26/02/08 05:38am SLT] Oh great, just GREAT. My graphics card fried itself, so now I need to find a new graphics card even faster. Jeez…

Really, who said formatting was good??? I got a ton of problems! Continue reading ‘Who said formatting’s good?’

Cries of a very, VERY furious Windows user

Before I begin, I want to say a quick opening fact: PCs SUCK!.

Why did I just say that? Well, let’s look at the facts, shall we?

Second life placed on hold due to first life complications

I’m doing terribly this school year, all due to my “web life” and lack of organization skills (currently). And so, I am suspending my second life (all, not just my Second Life account. However, it will not be cancelled or suspended, as I still have an ongoing premium plan. I’ll look into giving my land tier to someone…), in order to get my first life stabilized as it should be. The 9th grade is the big step between middle school and high school, and such, I need to get perfect (or at least very good) grades to allow me to be placed in my wanted class next year, or even make it to the next year. :???:

As of such, projects including DuoGrid will be placed on hold, and will be continued along the way. Sorry… :???:

Smiley’s “eight facts” about real life and virtual life

After seeing how others (multi-link — click each letter for a different post I found!) are writing these “eight facts”, I thought “Heck, why shouldn’t I do it as well?”. So, here I am!

Facts about Smiley

  • Smiley has a slight crush on someone in Teen Second Life, but doesn’t want to tell her name online in fear she will see it  .
  • Smiley sometimes likes to be a pixelated character in Habbo Hotel or Xabbo more than a laggy 3D character in Second Life or There.com .
  • Smiley looks forward to his human’s 18th birthday (due in 4 years) to move already to the main grid. “What’s taking that human so LONG???”
  • Smiley wants more time online and hates that his human neglects him lately…

Facts about Smiley’s human

  • Smiley’s human recently got addicted to his recently purchased copy of Folklore and is now in Chapter 5 with Ellen, and Chapter 3 with Keats out of 6 Chapters (per character). Smiley’s human does hate that the game doesn’t last forever…
  • Smiley’s human isn’t popular in class, but since this isn’t an all-popularity-based school, like in most US schools, he gets through the school day easily.
  • Smiley’s human likes gadgets, ALOT.
  • Smiley’s human likes a certain someone in school since the 7th grade, but is afraid to show any emotion  .

So, let the tagging begin!

I’m back, BABY!

After doing some diagnostics with my router and modem installation, I found out my lousy router was causing my whole networking issues, so, now, i’m BACK! Second Life is working fine on “safe regions”, but then again, I hardly visit other regions than Leviathan, Alcove, Eden, Eclivian, Orkarthel, and Evolve… Which takes out unfamiliar regions and Mainland :) .

Internet radio works fine (used to rebuffer every 7-10 seconds), Second Life has absolutely no packet loss unless I have music on AND have my bandwidth set to my subscription limit… Plus, YouTube will now not need to load for 40 minutes for a little 2-4 minutes video :) (E.g.: Torley’s latest video).

YAY!

Yes HD

[UPDATE 2 @ 13:53] Ok, apparently, I have to leave a phone number and they’ll call back on December 16th, their one-week-before-release date. Maybe later… If it doesn’t have that option, I don’t care about “high definition”… I mean, I can’t live without these recording features! It’s no longer “What’s now TV?”, it’s “What’s now on my hard drive?”…

[UPDATE 1 @ 13:41] Hmm, their site doesn’t say a thing about automatic recording and other “Tivo-like” features… Calling customer support…

Yes, the satellite company here FINALLY got High Definition broadcasting to Israel! Now, I hope they can transfer current recorded TV shows from my Yes Max (just like TiVo or Sky+), or we’re gonna have some serious problems… The official site does necessarily say Yes HD has recording features. Now contacting customer support… I wonder how Scrubs would look in HD… I know how Heroes would, I downloaded episodes 11-23 last season ’cause I couldn’t wait for Yes to bring them over and those were in HD. I really should put them on my PlayStation 3 (I got about 45GB free out of 55GB) for future viewing…

(Mortal Kombat) Armageddon!

I recently rented a Playstation 2 game called Mortal Kombat: Armageddon on my Backwards-compatible Playstation 3 (i’m mentioning this as the new 40GB Playstation 3 does NOT support Backwards-compatibility at all! [it does support Playstation {One} games, but those are too crappy to be count.]), and I gotta say, it’s as good as a Playstation 3 game. Up to 62 players playable, amazing “Konquest” (Conquest = one big quest consisting of normal-sized quests) mode, Motor Kombat (an option to play a small racing game with mini-characters, one of the mini-games released in every series game), Kreate-A-Fighter (self-explanatory), and of course, improved fighting system.

Got Ubuntu CDs — took less than assured six weeks!

Well, my two Ubuntu (pronounced oo-boon-too) CDs arrived in the mail — for free — in less than the assured six weeks plus. It took about 26 days, which is pretty fast regarding non-commercial shipments to Israel. Like my Playstation 2 Network Access Disc back in the day. Took them two and a half (2 1/2) months to ship it over. Back to Ubuntu, I need a few more for friends, so i’m now ordering more. I’ll soon clear some space on my bought-during-year-2001 PC, so I could install Ubuntu. Tons of people say that system is kick-ass and can take on Vista and Mac OS X, so I wanna get it installed side-by-side with my Windows XP, and soon-may-be Mac OS X Leopard, hacked to run on PCs.

Want Ubuntu in nice looking CDs as well? You can visit here to order your free CDs, but if you don’t wanna go through the trouble of another registration, feel free to email me at Smiley [at] DuoGrid [dot] com, and i’ll open a special order. If some people request, and are in the same region, I may suggest them to share a postal mail envelope to save up on Canonical Ltd’s expenses. I mean, we may not be paying for the CDs, but they are!.
